What is A Pike Fishing Tackle?

A fishing tackle set is termed as all of that necessary equipment that a fisherman might need. But when it’s about pike fishing, there are some specifications.

In a tackle of fishing for pike, you need to have the basic kits like a rod, a reel, a hook, a line, bite indicators and a trace wire. Later in this article, we’ve provided details about each of this equipment. For now, let’s stay with the names only.

Apart from the basics, you need a set of some extra tools that would make your fishing skills even better. According to expert pike anglers, these are necessary for both first timers or aged anglers. Here is the list of advanced pike fishing kits to keep in the tackle box-

  • Wire cutters.
  • Long and short forceps.
  • Pilers with long noses.

Why Fishermen Consider It as A Must?

I can name many of the fishes in freshwater, shallow water and saltwater that are often caught unintentionally. But pike fishes, especially smaller pikes like perches, roaches or ruddscantbe caught without specifically targeted tackles and techniques.

That was the core reason of anglers using pike fishing tackles. I know a few famous recreational fisherman who has their own custom tackle set for pike fishing. If you’re heading to be one, you have to do that as well.

But being pretty unfamiliar with any advanced fishing techniques, we need proper guidance. Here in the section below, we’ve provided those uncovered tips that you can find only from an old experienced fisherman-

Watch Out for these Facts of a Pike Fishing Tackle

I’d like to draw your attention and take a fresh loot at this part of this article because this is the section that you came to this web page for.

These are an exclusive set of pike fishing techniques which are collected from the internet and tested on the water. No matter what, we made sure that these tips have enough merit to be listed in this post-

  • The Pike Fishing Rod

There are two sorts of angling rods used in pike fishing. As mentioned earlier, pike fishes are three basic types according to their size. Each of them requires a specific rod or certain strength.

To catch small to medium sized pikes in not-so-deep part of the water, go for rods around 12 feet of length. The weight around 2.5 lbs will be okay.

But if you’re after bigger pikes, which are not right next to the shore, a 2.75-3.00 rod will do great. Carrying out the extra load of largely sized pikes will be easier.

  • Choose a Free Spool or Runner Type Reel

A lot of requirements come up as it’s about the reel of pike fishing. Firstly, you go for either a free spool or a runner type reel or both. It should have a spooling capacity of 250m or more, a minimum breaking strain of 15 lbs. It can also alternatively braid for 30 lbs breaking strain.

  • Choosing A Right Pike Fishing Bait

Predators like pike fishes often refuse to bite on a general fishing bait. So, they need special kinds of baits to trap in. Usually, two sorts of baits you can use to catch pikes. One is dead or live bait fishes and another are artificial imitation baits. Either way, you have to be a smart angler and checkout the bites at every second.

  • The Size of the Bait

The previous point was about the type of baits that may attract a pike fish to bite on it. But I didn’t say anything about the size in there.

The fact is, medium and large pike fishes are large in shape, and they won’t simply go after small baits. They look for bigger sized fishes and so does for the bait. So, to be safe buy a bait of 6 to 8 inches in length.

  • Pikes Play with The Bait

Unlike much other fish, if the pike once hits your bait and refuse to bite, don’t roll your reel. Pike fishes, especially northern pikes are notorious, and they often like to play with the angler’s bait. So, don’t give up till the fish finally get into the trap, especially while northern pike fishing.

  • Keep A Wire cutter for Emergency

Although it’s not a must in the list of a pike fishing tackle, trust me, it’s necessary. If the need arises, it can be used to cut a wore that the pike is hooked in.

  • Pick a Low Diameter Wire Trace

A hawk’s eye is needed to choose the right diameter wire trace. As the market has a good collection of low diameter wires, no need to cross the 35-lb line of breaking strain. Besides trace lengths also play an important role in pike fishing. Stay around 20 inches long traces. That should be well enough to stop the bite offs of the pikes.

  • Get A Semi-Barbless Patterned Hook

For making an angler more expert in pike fishing, choosing the pattern wisely is important. Usually, a semi-barbless pattern of the size of 6 to 8 inches is strong enough. However, if you don’t get a barbed hook available in the market nearby, a set of two long nosed pliers can be rolled down round barbs. Set the distance of the hooks at 3 inches.

  • A Force for Safety

Some of us may wonder of inclusion of a forsep in the list. But trust me, it’s an essential. Especially, if you google on a pike fish and have a look at the razor-sharp teeth, you’ll get my point. Keep a set of medium and large forceps to disconnect the bait from the fish.

  • Bite Indicators

The last thing that I’d suggest you keep in the pike fishing tackle is a bite indicator. This particular kit will help you notice that whenever the pike is biting the bait. No matter what type of byte indicator it is, it will provide you a visible signal or movement as the fish hits the bait. Two types of common baits are there for pike fishes- Audible Indicator and Visible indicator. If you want to stay alert by any mean, I’d suggest you use both.
